June Highsmith Hawkins

June Highsmith Hawkins, 86, of Sopchoppy, Florida entered the pearly gates of Heaven on January 4th, 2025, after a long and happy life. June was born in Thomas County, Georgia to her loving parents, Van Buren and Laura Mae Highsmith on April 2nd, 1938. She was the eldest sister of five children (Morgan Highsmith, Vanice Highsmith, Richard Highsmith, and Marvin Highsmith), and a born caregiver. June grew up on the family farm in Boston, Georgia and she went on to nursing boarding school upon her high school graduation in 1956. She had a lengthy and successful career as a registered nurse, touching lives across hospitals and homes in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. She met the love of her life, Eugene “Gene” Hawkins and went on to have two wonderful children whom she loved dearly, Robert “Bobby” Hawkins and Sharon Marie Hawkins. She retired to her home in Sopchoppy and spent her days enjoying long nature walks near the Ochlocknee River and watching the sunset from her favorite rocking chair. June was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Morgan and Richard, and her beloved husband Gene. She is survived by her sister Vanice, her brother Marvin, her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, her children Bobby and Sharon, her grandchildren Cody Hooks, Lindsay June Hawkins, Shelby Hawkins Harper, her many great-grandchildren, her family, and the endless lives she impacted. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Family Funeral Home-Harvey Young Chapel. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Burial to follow at West Sopchoppy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Hawkins family requests that you make any heartfelt donations to Big Bend Hospice, an organization that helped make June’s final days peaceful in the comfort of her own home. In the words of Florence Nightingale, “how very little can be done under the spirit of fear.” June spent her life with a strong and unshakeable faith in the Lord, seeking knowledge, and applying all she learned with a caring hand.
