George Granger

January 29, 1928 - September 17, 2017

George Leonard Granger, age 89, of Woodville, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 17, 2017, at Big Bend Hospice House. Funeral services will be on Friday, September 22, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Freedom Church First Assembly of God, 2801 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, FL. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 21, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Freedom Church. Interment will follow the service at White Church Cemetery in Woodville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Freedom Church – Building Fund, 2801 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308 or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, Tallahassee, FL 32308. George, also known as “Dick”, “Lucky 13”, “13”, and “CB #1” was born in Limestone, FL on January 29, 1928. He moved to Tallahassee after serving in the United States Air Force Police at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He returned to Tallahassee and drove a taxi until he joined the Tallahassee Police Department in April 1954. He retired from the TPD in July 1982 after twenty-eight years of service and joined the Leon County Sheriff’s Department within a few weeks and retired again after ten years of service. George was a very dedicated and loyal law enforcement officer. George was a member of Freedom Church First Assembly for over sixty years. He and his wife, Betty, faithfully served the church in many capacities, including leading the Young @ Heart/Keenagers group for many years. George enjoyed working with CB radios and talking skip with many of his friends across the United States. He is survived by: three children, Rodney (Marilyn) Granger, Crawfordville; Jeffery (Pam) Granger, Wacissa; and Derinda (Mark) Kirkland, Tallahassee; two grandchildren: Chad (Nicole) Granger, Crawfordville; and Brandy (Danial) Hathcock, Crawfordville; four great grandchildren: Reannah, Lillie, and Luke Granger; and Amelia Lynn Hathcock. George is also survived by his sister in-laws, Willie Mae Granger, Reba Granger, Barbara (Wayne) Lee, and his brother in-law, Ovis (Donna) Parker. He is known as “Uncle Dick” by many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Betty Parker Granger; his parents, George “Jack” and Nellie (Gerrell) Granger; his brothers, Carl, Ralph, Clyde, Harvey, and Donald; his sisters, Rochelle Chancy, Jeanette Chesser, Crystelle and Geraldine Granger.
