Richard Lennell Sanders, Sr. July 17, 1952 – March 9th, 2026 Richard Lennell Sanders, a man who lived with the "salt of the earth" spirit, passed away at the age of 73. A lifelong resident of Wakulla, Richard leaves behind a legacy of hard work, tall tales, and a deep, abiding love for his family. Born on July 17, 1952, in Sopchoppy, Florida, to John Woolley and Pauline (Revell) Sanders, Richard grew up with his roots firmly planted in Florida soil. After graduating from Wakulla High School in 1970, he immediately stepped up to serve his country by joining the Army National Guard of Florida Reserves. He served honorably for six years. Richard’s professional life was a reflection of his love for the land. He spent a long and dedicated career in reforestation and land clearing services, literally shaping the landscape of the county he loved. Whether he was planting for the future or clearing the way for something new, Richard believed in the value of a hard day’s work. At the center of Richard’s world was his wife of 47 years, Patricia Sanders. Together, they built a vibrant, sprawling family that served as his greatest source of pride. Richard was a man who found his greatest joy in the simple things: a successful hunting trip, a quiet day fishing, a flourishing garden, and—most importantly—the laughter of his children and grandchildren. He was known for his "one-of-a-kind" songs and his legendary storytelling. To hear Richard tell a story was to see the world through his unique, witty lens. To those who knew him best, his signature catchphrase “Vasa tamale!” will forever echo as a reminder of his spirited personality. Richard is survived by: His devoted wife: Patricia Sanders. His children: Sabrina Sanders, Jennifer Reyes, Wendy Sanders, Richie Sanders (Tabitha), and Kristi Sanders. His grandchildren: Sarah, Lyric, Caleb, Maya, Tabin, Aiden, Benjamin, Addalyn, and Rynleigh. His siblings: Anthony Sanders (Shari), Jerry Sanders (Barbara), Callie (Ricky), and Noel. A vast extended family: Including more than 40 nieces and nephews and many friends who were considered family. He was preceded in death by: His parents, John Woolley and Pauline (Revell) Sanders and his brothers Jack, James, Willard, and Gilbert, and his sister Trixie. Richard Sanders was a man who didn't just inhabit the outdoors; he was a part of them. He will be remembered every time a line is cast, a garden is harvested, or a story is told around a family table.
